Tim Kliphuis Trio

Crown Church. Wednesday 20th March 2024 at 7.30pm

Programme to feature the first complete performance of the Trio’s own arrangement of Pictures at an Exhibition by Modest Mussorgsky.

Tim Kliphuis (violin). Nigel Clark (guitar) and Roy Percy (bass)

Tim, Nigel and Roy need little intrduction to Highland audiences, having played in countless venues since they came together in Glasgow fifteen years ago.

Tim’s Scottish debut was a few years earlier when he played as a guest violinist with the Fapy Lafertin Band at one of the late Ken Ramage’s Nairn Jazz Festival events in the Universal Hall within the Findhorn Foundation. Tim studied classical violin at the Amsterdam Conservatoire but after a few sessions with the famous Stephane Grappelli took on the style of the Quintette du Hot Club de France, the ensemble that dominated European jazz from 1934 to 1948.

Nigel Clark is one of Europe’s top acoustic guitarists. He was the guitarist and arranger with eighties’ chart band Hue & Cry before going on to an illustrious career playing, recording – and touring the world with famous artists such as Gloria Gaynor and Carol Kidd. Nigel has been with Tim and Roy since the Trio’s inception and been influential in their many projects, most notably their arrangements of the Brandenburg Concertos, Piazzolla’s Four Seasons and most recently The Five Elements.

What is there to say about Roy Percy? He is probably the hardest-working bass player on the British trad jazz scene. For 20 years he has been an integral part of Swing 2008, the fine Django-inspired Edinburgh quartet. He plays with Craig McMurdo, Fat Sam’s Band and Ken Mathieson’s Classic Jazz Orchestra. In addition he makes frequent trips south of Hadrian’s Wall to work with almost every trad band in existence. Roy has been with Tim and Nigel ever since the Trio was formed, touring all over the UK as well as throughout Europe and frequently to South Africa.

As one of the Elements in the Trio’s Five Elements Suite is Water, they have been active in raising money for WaterAid. In March 2023 they were invited to play Water in the General Assembly of the United Nations in New York to open the UN World Water Conference.
